Aligning with the Moon for Self-Care and Productivity

Ever noticed how one day you can conquer the world and the next day you can barely even face your friends?

Things like too many commitments, stress, late nights or intense exercise can leave us exhausted and impact our productivity. But there’s a nifty way you can tap into your innate productivity barometer – especially if you’re a woman. It’s called the lunar cycle and quite simply, it relates to the female hormone cycle.

Patriarchy tells us that the waxing and waning of a women’s hormone cycle is an imbalance which must be “fixed”. However, the feminine paradigm suggests that instead of seeing ourselves as machines that should have consistent output, we should see ourselves as a system. A system that produces a variety of super-powers that are presented to us at different times of the month.

Get into your flow

Understanding the phases of your body allows you to optimize your energy and helps you be productive in the right way and at the right time.

Here’s how it works:

Follicular Phase: First Quarter Moon

This phase has been referred to as the Emergence and the Creative Superstar. Starting at the beginning of your period, it lasts around 10-14 days. This phase is the peak of your creative energy and it’s the perfect time to start new projects, plan, brainstorm and approach people with new ideas. It’s the period of infinite potential.

You’ll notice that you feel confident, driven and motivated during this time. Use it to your advantage.

Ovulation Phase: Full Moon

This phase has been called the Visibility or the Great Communicator phase. Your brain chemistry during this time means that you’ll be able to articulate and express yourself well. Use this time to have important conversations, connect with others, network, negotiate and ask for the things you want – because you’re a magnet. Inhale. And, if you feel inclined, do energetic exercise or sun salutations.

Luteal Phase: Waning Moon

Known as the Culmination or Power phase, this is a good time to complete projects. Slow down. Finish things off. Preserve your energy. Be more introverted. Use this time to focus on aspects like admin, accounting, and reports – activities that don’t require you to expose yourself to others. Spend time in smaller groups or one-on-one. Scale down the intensity of your exercise and rest rather than collapse.

Menstruation Phase: New Moon

This phase is centered around Intuition and Reflection. It’s an ideal time to turn inward, permit rest, and reflect. This time of reflection positions us perfectly to evaluate and course-correct, as our analytical and intuitive reasoning strengths are dominant. Take a day off if you can. Be still, regardless of what everyone else might be “busy” with. Restore yourself by spending time in nature. Get solid sleep.

I’ll finish with some wise words from Alisa Vitti, HHC, AADP, a women’s Menstrual Health Expert, Functional Nutritionist, best-selling author of WomanCode and creator of The Cycle Synching Method and the MyFlo app:

“Women are seeking to shift the imbalances created by the patriarchy, we must stop modeling our lives on a masculine biochemical 24-hour schedule. It’s time to work based on a female paradigm of productivity, success and fulfillment.”

ALISA VITTI

So remember, go with your flow and you will grow. Swim with the tide, sail with the wind.
