Mindful marketing in unprecedented times

Are you questioning how the hell are we supposed to do business in the middle of COVID? Are you worried about your messaging when so many have lost their jobs?

In early June, the U.S. jobs report from the Labor Department expected to show U.S. employers shed nearly 30 million positions from their payrolls by spring. As a result of COVID-19 and related shutdowns.

Yes, these are unprecedented times, we have never lived through anything like this and we are all learning how to navigate the way through. The world has changed and we are all changing with it. We now have the opportunity to become even more caring and more generous. That is what society needs right now.

This doesn’t mean that you should be shy about promoting and selling your services or products, but it means that we must do it in a compassionate way.

There are a lot of compassionate ways to do business during this time. Give yourself the opportunity to reinvent yourself, to contribute to your community and to inspire others.

With that in mind, here are three simple ways to market and sell with compassion.

1. Buy 1 give 1

Lots of companies use this simple way of giving back. When someone buys your product or service you give one to those in need. Toms shoes set an example of how this can be done as the original one for one shoe brand. For every pair of Toms shoes bought a pair would be given to someone in need of shoes. Toms has now expanded their giving principles, however, they have stayed true that when you buy a pair you as a customer can choose to give a pair of shoes to someone without.

2. Offer a percentage of your revenue

A great practice is to offer a percentage of your revenue to various causes. This way customers can be sure that where they are spending their money is trustworthy. It also means that you are doing what you can to improve the world around you. Something that will be needed in the new world that is developing. The founder of Patagonia, Yvon Chouinard, has set a great example of how businesses can practice this. He founded 1% for the planet with Craig Mathews, the owner of blue ribbon files. Businesses signed up to this organisation contribute 1% of total annual sales to grassroots environmental groups. Affecting real change for the planet.

3. Offer extra value in your service or product

Understanding what people are experiencing around the world can help you make sure you offer extra value in your service or product. If you are marketing something, it now needs to add value to someone who buys it. As marketers, we now need to go further than before to ensure we help our customers.

Marketing as a business is still important during a global pandemic, but we now need our business and our marketing to have compassion. That way, we can grow our businesses while helping those around us.
