How to make your home workspace work for you

Are you distracted working from home? Neuroscience tells us that meditating during working hours will improve our focus, productivity, mood and stress levels. We become happier, more satisfied with our job, more creative and productive.

During this period, with a global pandemic, most of us are working from home and some of us have our kids and partners sharing the space with us. Here are some tips that will help you cope with it all and create a mindful working environment:

1. Have a dedicated workspace

If you are not lucky enough to have your own office at home, claim your favorite part of the house, and create a special soulful productive “corner”. Demark your area with some plants, aerials are great for this. Get some bookshelves with inspirational books and create your quiet zone, where everyone will respect your space.

2. Dress for success

Be comfortable and casual but smart enough to jump on a Zoom meeting, and if for nothing else to elevate your moral.

3. Set boundaries

Explain to your family your working schedule and that you won’t be available to chat during working hours. Now make sure you aren’t the one who starts chatting about that funny video you just got on your email!

4. Wear headphones

You can get the expensive noise-blocking earphones or simple headphones or AirPods. Wearing headphones really signifies to people – don’t disturb me!

5. Listen to music to help you focus

Play some classic music or another slow pace genre that you like. If music distracts you, try some alpha binaural beat therapy. It’s proven to be effective in reducing stress and anxiety, while increasing focus, concentration, and motivation.

6. Avoid procrastination

Don’t wait for inspiration, just do the work, start with small steps and refine your work later.

7. Save household chores for later

Determine times to work and times to look after the house and the family. Be rigorous about your schedule.

8. Create a schedule

Create your schedule for the day and let everyone know what that is, so they don’t disturb you during your working hours.

9. Stay off social media

Remove all social media alerts from your laptop and phone.

10. Take regular breaks

Pet your cat, drink some water, take deep breaths, look out the window, meditate, go for a walk, do a lunchtime yoga class. Any joyful activity away from your laptop will help you relax and get into your flow again, bringing those creative juices back to you.
